The masters of furniture restoration, repairs and traditional french polishing.
You don't need magic to make coffee tables shrink at Grainmaster.
This week we worked on a living room set, with a twist. We had to make a small coffee table out of a large one, match it and make it look new. Here is what they looked like before:
We sawed the large one almost in half, to match the small table. Then came the tricky part; fixing the edge to match the other sides. Using our router, we carved the sawed-off side into a scalloped edge, making it a perfect match! We then screwed on the legs, polished them up and made them as good as new! Here they are done up:
Next came the lounges. They were in a bit of a sorry state when they arrived, scratched, dented and otherwise pock-marked. Here are some before shots:
We then sanded them down and polished them up, restoring them to perfection and making them look as good as new. Here they are with the coffee tables:
And here they are at home:
All in all a job well done!
So you don't need magic to make coffee tables shrink, as the end result is magic enough!
So if you need to minimize, or otherwise aggrandize, don't improvise, call Grainmaster and personalize!
At Grainmaster, we like to strip...
Chairs, that is.
Have a terrible finish on your table? See a chair you like that has potential, but is just the wrong color? Well Grainmaster is here to save the day!
This week, we did a touch up on a set of chairs. Here they are before anything had been done to them:
We then pulled it apart:
Stripped them back:
And put them together again, as naked as the day they were carved:
Here is a before and after shot:
This wasn't a major re-coloring or extreme alterations, but a nice touch up. The everyday wear and tear of daily life takes it's toll. After glueing and screwing the chairs back together, we re-finished the set and turned their once dull, worn finish into a warm, gleaming, glowing set of dining chairs. You could even say we gave these 'stripped' chairs a new 'coat' to wear!
So if you have a piece that needs a nice touch up, come contact Grainmaster today, and see your worries stripped away!
What do you do when your piano has a scratch, nick or dent? Send it to Graimaster, that's what!
When this piano came into our workshop, it was a right mess. The timber veneer of the front section was damaged beyond repair and it was left to us at Grainmaster to fix the damage.
First we had to take off the damaged veneer piece, leaving the front bare:
We glued a brand new piece of veneer onto the piano front, and compressed it for a day:
The end result? A brand new (although not yet matching) veneer piece. Almost as good as new!
Once this was done, it was time to beautify!
All we had to do was wait for the stain to dry, and it was as good as new!
So if you have a piano that needs some fine-tuning, come to Grainmaster, the one stop shop for all your restoration and repair needs!

We also worked on a complimentary table to go alongside it, working the silver along the length, and showing off the grain beneath the pewter colored glaze. This dining set is certainly going to be the centrepiece of any room!
(Note the intricate detailing in the last image, helping provide that antique look on a modern finish)

Is your staircase old and scratched? Do you have a new built-in wardrobe that is just not the right color? What about that office space that needs a new coat of paint?
Grainmaster understands that it is not just a table or a chair that makes a house look good. Sometimes the house needs a touch up too!
On show for you today are some of our work on home interiors. First up we have a sleek, modern built-in bookcase and TV unit. We don't just to restorations on antiques, but on brand-new pieces of home furniture. This wall unit, done in a deep chestnut color, is a beautiful, modern look suitable for any beautiful, modern home.
Stairs are incredibly important in any home, not only for the practical reasons (obviously!) but for aesthetic. These stairs are not just for getting up and down, but act as a focal centre-point to the house. Finished in the same chestnut-honey glow as the wall unit, ou can really see the color and grain of the timber used due to the polished, professional Grainmaster finish. Beautiful and modern, but with a touch of antique elegance, these stairs are truly gorgeous to behold.
Lastly, there is the office. Offering a modern rusticism, this office shows the power and the beauty of well-finished timber like nothing else. Powerful and modern, yet not lacking in warmth and homeliness, the honey-glow of the ash wood walls is as striking as it is comforting. Beautiful to look at and be in, this office shows the wonders that Grainmaster French Polishing can do for you!
So if you have a kitchen to restore, or a new bedroom unit that needs some beautifying, ring our number! We here at Grainmaster promise that even the simplest piece of home and furniture-ware can become something sublime.
Furniture restoration is an art. It is more than just painting and spraying. It is about learning to care for timber, and turning furniture into works of art and centrepieces of any room. From your Grandfather's favourite armchair, to that old table you picked up from the side of the road, to even that brand new table you just bought straight from the shop. We can restore, repair, repaint, and re-do to make it the work of art it deserves to be.
French Polishing is the process of applying the materials shellac and oil to timber to provide it with a warm, natural gleam. Developed in France, it was the technique used for Kings and Emperor’s alike, with many château’s and royal houses throughout Europe laying claim beautiful pieces of usable art. At Grainmaster, we specialise in this procedure, priding ourselves in the rich traditionalism and history of this technique.
However, we also offer a variety of other modern paint and lacquer finishes for commercial, corporate and shop fit outs. Whether it is French provincial styling, ultra-modern flair, or wherever your imagination leads you, whatever your tastes, whatever your need, we will cater for you.
Just ring our number, and ask for a quote, we here at Grainmaster will be happy to help you out!
Boris Basioli is the Grainmaster. With over thirty years experience in his line of work, he has fine-tuned his craft into an art form. An un-paralleled artisan, he is the best Sydney has to offer. Continually producing high quality work, he devotes his time to achieving perfection. He was apprentice of the year in 1987, was qualified and trained by the legendary John McGregor, and completed his apprenticeship at P.E. Clarke and Sons
A true artist, he has worked alongside architects, interior designers and leading cabinet-makers doing some of Sydney’s top end work for high profile customers. But he is more than happy to help bring a family heirloom back to life, or turn trash into a treasure for the generations to come. From antiques to brand new, off-the-shop-floor pieces, he turns it all into works of art to be loved and used by all.
Our new Tassie Oak kitchen benchtop was saved by our discovery of Grainmaster in Punchbowl. In these days of mass-production, it is good to know that there are still a few master-craftsmen around like Boris, working to create original high quality work. He was able to colour match our existing table-top and provide a polish finish exactly to our specification. Thanks Boris, your workmanship is the crowning glory of our new kitchen.
Thank you so much for the great job you did with our chairs. They both look and feel beautiful as does the table you did for us previously.
Boris took away our badly battered 1800s partners desk and returned us a piece of historical art. His passion and appreciation for restoring antique furniture needs to be seen to be fully appreciated. The desk he returned to us far exceeded our highest hopes. It is increasingly hard to find master craftsman such as Boris with the skills, knowledge, appreciation and enthusiasm to exceed your highest expectations.
Boris did a fabulous job on our 1920s Queensland maple family dining table. It was badly scratched and marked from many years of everyday family use. Boris restored the table to its former beauty and we are so pleased with the result. His service was wonderful, from quoting promptly to picking up the table and returning it within just over a week. He charged a very fair and reasonable price, including some repairs to the mechanism for extending the table, at no extra charge. I can highly recommend Grainmaster.
I haven't enough adjectives to describe how wonderful it has been dealing with Boris. His punctuality and reliability were faultless as was the work he did on two French polished wardrobes of my mum's which were damaged and at least 80 years old. They look stunning. His workmanship and skill is blatantly apparent in these superbly finished pieces. I can't recommend him highly enough.
I can’t thank Boris enough for the fantastic job he did on restoring three timber display cabinets.
These pieces have been used in my Optometry practice for the last 90 years so had plenty of marks and scratches.

Boris Basioli did a wonderful job in bringing the wooden cabinet of the clock back to life. It was great to see the original finish of the wood again.
