This week we are showing you a Boardroom extension table. Now this might seem like a simple job, but we assure you, it's not.
The client, none other than the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Sydney, is a long time customer of ours, and well known for their fastidiousness. We had to match the table to pre-existing, and pre-finished chairs and cabinet pieces. We had a very short time-frame. And it needed to be a solid finish that endures. Also, it's an antique. Yeah, not too easy at all.
We first stripped it down and bogged up the holes and scratches:
We then restored it to perfection. Matching the already existing pieces, we re-lacquered the table, giving it a sheen and a shine that you see now. Because of it's boardroom usage, we finished it so the finish was heavy and durable, perfect for commercial usage.

Over the last few years we here at Grainmaster have begun using Eco paints! Not only are these paints good for the environment, but for the whole family!
You know that dizzy feeling you get when you're near a freshly painted piece of furniture? How about all the watering eyes, headaches or nausea when around freshly applied paint and finishes? That's the VOC's fault (Volatile Organic Compound. Aka: Not good!)
This volatile airborn solvent seen in other, more industrial paints is harmful to the environment and health. So when given the choice to change to a healthier, safer and greener alternative, Grainmaster had to say yes.
Unlike other finishes and sealers, waterborn agents don't change the color of the timber, meaning that instead of tunring a nice piece of furniture a duller color, you can get the natural look of the wood!
When using waterborn colors, nothing can suggest that it is any different from traditional paints. On this sideboard and chair we used only waterborn products. The paint, sealers and finishes are all eco friendly, and you can't even tell the difference!
Using a waterborn agent that bonds to surfaces effortlessly, these paints have no VOC. That means there are no nasty, toxic fumes. It is safe to use indoors (that old diningroom table you want restored) around kids (we can paint your new baby's cot any color you like) and is even asthma safe (no worries there!)

French Polishing is the process of applying the materials shellac and oil to timber to provide it with a warm, natural gleam. Developed in France, it was the technique used for Kings and Emperor’s alike, with many château’s and royal houses throughout Europe laying claim beautiful pieces of usable art. At Grainmaster, we specialise in this procedure, priding ourselves in the rich traditionalism and history of this technique.

Boris Basioli is the Grainmaster. With over thirty years experience in his line of work, he has fine-tuned his craft into an art form. An un-paralleled artisan, he is the best Sydney has to offer. Continually producing high quality work, he devotes his time to achieving perfection. He was apprentice of the year in 1987, was qualified and trained by the legendary John McGregor, and completed his apprenticeship at P.E. Clarke and Sons
A true artist, he has worked alongside architects, interior designers and leading cabinet-makers doing some of Sydney’s top end work for high profile customers. But he is more than happy to help bring a family heirloom back to life, or turn trash into a treasure for the generations to come. From antiques to brand new, off-the-shop-floor pieces, he turns it all into works of art to be loved and used by all.
Our new Tassie Oak kitchen benchtop was saved by our discovery of Grainmaster in Punchbowl. In these days of mass-production, it is good to know that there are still a few master-craftsmen around like Boris, working to create original high quality work. He was able to colour match our existing table-top and provide a polish finish exactly to our specification. Thanks Boris, your workmanship is the crowning glory of our new kitchen.

Boris took away our badly battered 1800s partners desk and returned us a piece of historical art. Boris did a fabulous job on our 1920s Queensland maple family dining table. It was badly scratched and marked from many years of everyday family use. Boris restored the table to its former beauty and we are so pleased with the result. His service was wonderful, from quoting promptly to picking up the table and returning it within just over a week. He charged a very fair and reasonable price, including some repairs to the mechanism for extending the table, at no extra charge. I can highly recommend Grainmaster.
I haven't enough adjectives to describe how wonderful it has been dealing with Boris. His punctuality and reliability were faultless as was the work he did on two French polished wardrobes of my mum's which were damaged and at least 80 years old. They look stunning.
